Focus on Health:
Can I See A Chiropractor if I’m Pregnant?
By: Trina Ting, DC
Advanced Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is a family practice: we pride ourselves on offering care for the whole family, and it often even begins before the baby is born! I’ve treated many expecting moms before, during, and after their pregnancies and continue to treat the children once they’ve made their way into the world. Many of my expectant moms ask about chiropractic care and how pregnancy may affect their pre-existing issues or even if chiropractic can simply benefit and make things easier for the labour and delivery.
The obvious effect of pregnancy on the body is the extra weight gain. This not only puts extra strain on the joints, but it also significantly shifts the body’s centre of gravity as the pregnancy belly expands. This means that the spine will want to shift forward to accommodate the new centre of gravity, pulling the shoulders and pelvis forward. This in turn, can put pressure on the spinal joints and nerves. More fluid accumulates around the baby and in turn, throughout the whole body. This is the reason many women have swollen ankles and feet. The swelling can also compress the nerves and cause numbness and tingling.
The pregnant woman is often feeling helpless when it comes to aches and pains, since she often wants to avoid unnecessary medication. This is where chiropractic care can step in.
Chiropractic care has been around for over one hundred years and has proven to be a safe and effective treatment for neck and low back pain, without the unnecessary use of drugs or surgery. Many of our patients have come to us during their any stage in their pregnancy to manage their back pain before, during, and after delivery and to maintain their bodily health throughout. It is important to tell your chiropractor if you are pregnant, or even possibly trying to get pregnant. We may be assessing and treating you in the very early stages of pregnancy, and while it’s safe to do so, we need to be informed in case we need to exercise caution or modify your treatment plan.
With computerized adjusting, there is no excess twisting or turning to the spine. It is also much easier for the pregnant patient to be adjusted in the seated position. Chiropractic care can do a lot to ease the strain on the body during pregnancy. You might be pleasantly surprised to find how easy computerized treatments can be at a time when even putting on your socks seems like a chore.

Naturopathic Doctors work with pregnant moms to ensure that they are receiving the proper nutrition. They can also help decrease morning sickness symptoms, increase their energy, and overall promote a healthy pregnancy and child. The goal is to optimize mom’s nutrition to ensure that the growing baby receives all the vitamins and minerals they need to grow.
With pregnancy, Naturopathic Doctors will work with the mom to create an individualized treatment plan, which will focus on optimal nutrition, and strengthening of the digestive and immune system. Often, herbs, vitamins and minerals are prescribed to help optimize and strengthen the body.
Key factors when working with pregnant moms are proper diet and nutrition, decreased nausea, optimized digestion, and stress reduction. Naturopathic Doctors also use homeopathy, acupuncture, botanical medicine and some hands-on therapeutic touch to stimulate the body’s own unique ability to heal and correct imbalances.
I have found in my practice that acupuncture can be beneficial to help with overall relaxation for moms throughout pregnancy. Acupuncture can help with balancing one’s energy flow, help decrease nausea, and help with stress reduction.

During your pregnancy, the nutrients from the food you eat go to your baby first before it passes over to you. Even if you skip a meal your body will take the nutrients from you to keep baby healthy. This is just one of the reasons why it is so important to eat regularly and healthily!
